Melville Rovers 3 Silverknowes Vale 5
The Gyle 30th August 2008
Silverknowes began this game full of confidence after their midweek win over Civil Service and it was not long until they were in control of this match to. Wheelan and Miller were making nuisances of themselves down either wing for the Melville defence from kickoff and it wasnt a surprise when Miller opened the scoring. A rather hopeful ball into space by Powch early on, in between the goalkeeper and defence was left to each other, with Miller racing on in to slide the ball past the hesitant goalkeeper. Silverknowes should have gone on from there and took confidence from the early goal and possesion dominance, but just like midweek lost concentration, when Lumsden lost the ball deep in his own half. The Melville player then swung a ball deep to the back post where two strikers where waiting to head home. A poor goal to lose, especially after the impressive start. This seemed to give Silverknowes the kick up the backside they needed, as they went on to dominate the rest of the half. First of all brave play by Miller restored Silverknowes's advantage, when his initial low shot came back off the post and stopped close to the line, but as he slid in to knock the ball over the line, he cannoned his head off the post. Unfortunatley the tin plate in his head on the other side that he hit! Silverknowes soon made it 3-1, when David Manson linked well with Wheelan, before Wheelan cut the ball back for Burns on the edge of the box. He then took a touch, composed himself and fired past the helpless goalkeeper. Silverknowes were now attacking at will. They came close several times, with long range efforts from David Manson, Lumsden and Wheelan. Powch almost scored his first from the club, when David Manson got the bye line and swung in a beautiful cross only for Powch to glance his header wide. The fourth was not long coming though, when Scott Manson danced past the Melville right back before rounding the keeper and passing into the empty net.
Half Time 1-4
Silverknowes did not waste anytime in the second half, when from kickoff nearly added a fifth. Great play by Lumsden and Miller again allowed Miller to get to the bye line to cross, only for the chance to go abegging. Minutes later though, Silverknowes did score and what a goal. Lumsden received the ball from Bann in the left back area before driving forward and releasing Miller down the wing. Miller then evaded the presence of the Melville defender before a inch perfect cross for the onrushing Powch to smash home his first goal. Silverknowes then seemed to take the sting out of the game with some tired slack passing in the final third, which allowed Melville to get their just reward for trying to make a fight of it and not throwing in the towel. Their forward managed to break lose of the close attention of Bann and Craig before firing a low shot at Mason, who parried the shot to his left, only for the striker to pick up the loose ball and fire into the corner of the net. Then another scare for Silverknowes as the Melville right midfielder hit the bye line before cutting the ball back across the six yard box and into the path of his onrushing teammate to pull another goal back. Silverknowes should then have been awarded a penalty when Scott Manson was clipped as he tried to turn in the box, much to the disgust of Silverknowes, the referee signalled a goal kick. Lumsden almost added a six later on with a direct freekick, just clearing the top right hand corner of the goal. The game then fell very flat and scrappy with no real chances to note. Silverknowes hung on to a well deserved victory. The scoreline not reflectng how much Silverknowes dominated and controlled the match for long periods, but it just goes to show you a couple of minutes of slackness and indecision can lead ot you losing goals. Another win though and thats all that matters at this time of the season for now.
