Silverknowes Vale v Granton Vale 3-4 22nd September 2007 Wardie Playing Fields A good old grudge derby match, in what was a good match all round. Silverknowes started off the better side with a lot of possesion early on in their own half without creating many chances. A couple of balls in behind the Granton defence was all that the opening 15 minutes had to offer until Silverknowes took the lead through Cunningham. Mounsey picked up a loose ball in the middle of the park, he spotted Cunningham's run and played the ball over the Granton defence into his path. Cunningham took one touch with chest to cushion the ball, before hitting an unstoppable shot from 30 yards past Delworth into the top left hand corner. Silverknowes should have taken heart from this and gone on, but as it was, the goal ignited Granton. Only minutes later they were level, the ball broke to Pollock on the edge of the box and he hit a sweet strike leaving Mason rooted. Granton then should have taken the lead with several good chances. First of all Pollock hitting the post from an acute angel, then confusion in the Silverknowes defence allowed the Lee Hart to shoot wide when he only had Mason to beat. Then from a near impossible angle, the Henderson managed to get his shot away and elude everyone, including the keeper, only for it to crash of the underside of the bar and away to safety. Silverknowes did have a chance of their own to take the lead, only for Mounsey to hit straight at Delworth rather than square the ball to the on-rushing pair of Cunningham and Mathieson. HT 1-1 The opening ten minutes of the second half was mainly the two teams canceling each other out, until Henderson was stupidly bundled over in the box by Stuart Buckley. Sturgeon stepped to put Granton in front. Silverknowes, as Granton did to them in the first half equalised almost immediatley. A long bye kick from Dickson was won in the air by Cunningham, the ball fell between the Granton centre halfs, allowing Mathieson to drive through the middle of them and slot beyond Delworth. Cunningham then pounced on some sloppy defending and broke down the left before laying off to Mathieson, only for his weak shot to be saved by Delworth. Silverknowes were now getting frustrated with the referee and two Granton players, who were continueing to foul and both had already been booked. Granton did take the lead again when the Henderson cut the ball back from the left and the ball fell kindly for Pollock at the edge of the box to pick his spot. Minutes later a carbon copy of the third allowed Henderson to shoot high past Mason. It was looking like how many at this stage, as Silverknowes lost their shape and Granton to could sense this. Jenkinson did pull a goal back for Silverknowes to setup a grandstand finish, after he capitalised on a goal mouth scramble, but it wasnt to be. The better side won on the day, but for some poor defending the result could have been different. Team Mason, Henderson, Savage(Ste.Buckley), Dickson, Stu.Buckley, Hildersley, Mounsey(Jenkinson), Finlayson, St.Manson, Mathieson, Cunningham(Horler) |
